I’m Ovidiu Bute - Ovi to humans - an engineering leader and software architect based in Romania. I’ve spent my career helping teams turn complex domains into software that can be operated, understood, and changed.

From products to platforms

I started writing software in 2005. The early years taught me how much the quality of a system depends on decisions that happen long before a technology is chosen: where boundaries sit, which complexity is essential, and what a team makes easy - or difficult - for itself.

At Hootsuite, I worked on products at social-media scale and helped evolve a large JavaScript codebase toward TypeScript. That experience sharpened my thinking about migrations: the technical destination matters, but sequencing, team alignment, and continuing to ship matter just as much.

At Bolt, I worked closer to fast-moving product and platform problems. It reinforced a lesson I still carry: architecture is not a diagram made in advance. It is a series of judgments about where to preserve options and where to commit.

Today, I lead engineering at Fabric, where we help media and entertainment companies manage complex content catalogs. The work spans multi-tenant SaaS architecture, metadata relationships, authorization, ingestion, search, developer experience, and increasingly the interfaces between production systems and AI agents.

What I care about now

I’m interested in how engineering changes when AI becomes both part of the product and part of the team. That includes designing APIs agents can use safely, making infrastructure legible, choosing abstractions with better feedback loops, and building configurable SaaS without turning every customer need into a special case.

I write about those ideas in Engineering for the Agentic Era - field notes grounded in current production work rather than speculative demos.

How I work

My strongest contribution is usually judgment: framing the real problem, making tradeoffs explicit, and creating enough technical clarity for a team to move with confidence. I value systems that are boring in the right places, observable under stress, and understandable by the people who inherit them.

Outside work, travel, gaming, home automation, economics, and markets keep me curious about systems of a different kind.
